What Do You Expect?

“Then he touched their eyes and said, ‘According to your faith will it be done to you’; and their sight was restored” (Matthew 9:29–30 NIV).

A friend of mine, Bruce, taught college in Oregon for awhile. When he began his first semester teaching there, he was told that the college placed students in English classes by their level of ability. Bruce was assigned to teach two “average ability” classes and one “advanced ability.” He really enjoyed teaching the advanced class: they seemed more alert, more fun, asked better questions, and, as expected, had a higher grade average than the other classes.

On the final day of the semester, Bruce commented on these differences to the other professors in the faculty lounge. He said he hoped to get more of the advanced classes next semester. But to his surprise, his department director said, “Bruce, I don’t know where you got your information but we phased out the average/advanced distinction a year ago. You’ve been teaching mixed classes all semester like the rest of us!”

Bruce couldn’t believe it! He checked his records, and sure enough, there were far more A’s and B’s in the class that he thought was full of smart kids. And he really had enjoyed teaching that class more. But the only real difference between the classes had been Bruce’s expectations of them.

You can set people up for success or failure by your expectations.

People tend to become what they think we expect them to be. If you communicate to the people around you that you expect them to be lazy, uncreative, and negative, that’s probably how they will respond to you. On the other hand, if you treat people like winners, they’re likely to become winners. Psychologists call it “The Pygmalion Effect.”

• The best executives expect employees to have creative ideas.
• The best speakers expect audiences to be interested.
• The best leaders expect people to want to follow.
• The best teachers expect students to learn.

Craft Fairs

Local craft fairs are another wonderful way to sell your crafts. Many areas have several of these, especially around the holiday season. Here you can set up a booth or table and the shoppers will come to you.

There is usually a fee for space or a table, but these are generally minimal. Check with the local chamber of commerce, churches or civic organizations to find out if there are events scheduled locally at which you can purchase a table.

Other Local Ideas

Another way to sell your items locally is take a cue from the direct sales industry and have a home party! Invite your friends and family over, and encourage them to bring a guest.

On the day of the party, create a nice display of your items. Let your guests touch and feel your items. If you do not have enough supply on hand, simply take orders for your items and deliver the item when itís completed. Make a cateloge of some of your favorite best sellers. Encourage your guests to have their own home party for your items by giving a special discount to your future hostesses.

If you are a crafty person, who enjoys crafting as a hobby, you can turn your favorite pastime into a moneymaking venture. Many people do not have these talents and will be more than happy to pay for your handmade items.

Become A Blog Designer

Did you know that many people are now using blogging platforms, such as Wordpress, to create both blogs and websites? Even large companies such as Ford Motor Company use Wordpress as the base for their website.

There are many reasons that businesses, both large and small are turning to Wordpress. For starters, it is open source, which means that it is free! It is easy to customize and can serve many different purposes. A person may use it to create a simple online journal or it can be modified into an e-commerce store that sells hundreds or thousands of products.

If you are familiar with Wordpress and know how to customize a theme, you should consider becoming a blog designer. Unlike a web designer, you wonít need to know anything too specialized or difficult.

You will need to know how to upload a theme and customize it by changing the colors, and add a customized header. If you are not skilled in graphic design, you could outsource the creation of the header.

As a blog designer, you could choose to work locally. Many of your local business owners may not be very familiar with websites, blogs, and the differences between them. They may not have even heard of Wordpress before.

Life’s Little Pleasures

It’s the little things that make life worth living. An unexpected smile from a stranger, a gentle hug from a child or running into an old friend are just a few of the small moments that can enrich our world. There are literally dozens of meaningful moments that occur through the course of a day. Unfortunately, many of us are oblivious to them as they pass us by having neither been received nor absorbed. Life just keeps getting faster and more isolated as far too many of us lead a life of seclusion, hooked up to the latest electronic device instead of a flesh and blood human being.

Acknowledging and embracing the special moments in life not only enhances our lives but also the lives of others. As these moments accumulate, there is an even greater chance that they will penetrate our hearts to renew awareness, jumpstart spiritual growth and encourage new ideas. It is when we open our hearts to all of the possibilities around us that miracles can truly begin.

Nearest and Dearest

The relationships we have with those closest to us are often the most meaningful. Yet, despite the familiarity, it’s easy to overlook the impact our loved ones have on our world. We often belittle their actions by simply chalking it up to something that ‘have’ to do because they love us. Unfortunately, this robs the loved one of the value of reciprocation and cheapens their deed. Instead we should be receptive to whatever kindnesses we are offered and show the gratitude that is undoubtedly deserved.

To Forgive and Forget

Forgiveness is not always easy especially when egos collide and both sides feel slighted regardless of the reason. However, rising above the turmoil and taking the first step on the winding road of absolution is one of life’s greatest pleasures. It does, however, take someone who is sturdy in character to concede defeat. Yet the knowledge that it was your strength that led to a resolution is more than satiating enough. More importantly, taking the higher road and allowing someone to go in peace without holding a grudge is the sign of an individual who is truly at peace with themselves as well as others.

It’s unfortunate that the concept of gift giving does not always transcend the holidays we celebrate every year, such as Valentine’s Day or Christmas. Giving a small token of affection to someone out of love or simply to recognize a job well done is the fastest way to cement a meaningful bond. Have you ever received an unexpected gift? Remember the way it made you feel and how your heart soared? However, they are not all meaningful and most of them can be harmful to us, whether in a physical or spiritual sense. Look! I am learning how to stamp and solder! These are my first few pieces. I am so very excited! It was my new years resolution to not only overcome my fear of fire, and using the torch, but to learn how to solder! Stamping is also new to me. I have so many new things to learn, but with an abundance of books at my side, and plenty of mentors, I feel confident that I have a good start. These pieces are not perfect, but they are my firsts! Paul Newman - We will miss you!

I have never considered myself a "fan" of any celebrity or actor. I have never written a fan letter to anyone. I did not have boy posters up on my wall as a teenager.

Yet last Saturday Morning, I found myself in tears over a perfect stranger. I could not believe that I was crying over someone whom I had never meet, only watched on the screen. It felt so silly, but I could not help it.

Yes, he was know for his ama

zing generosity, his huge heart over the less fortunate, his passions in life, and his famously dazzling good looks.

But untill 4 years ago, Paul Newman was just a distant blip in my radar. A name I certainly knew, and thought well of for sure, but nothing to get emotional about.

Four years ago I was in the library, looking for a movie for the kids and I to watch. A few really, as my husband, Marty, was away on a business trip for a week. He often goes away for a week at a time for work. We are close, and really miss him a lot. He is a great fun big kid that we all enjoy and look up to. So I come across a movie, "Cool Hand Luke". My eyes go large as I take in the picture on the video cover. Silently, I show my kids the video. They both stare. Finally, Betsy says " I

did not know Marty acted?" Cameron says "No way! That totally looks just like Marty!". I agree. We check out the movie. At home, I study the character Luke, and notice his behavior, his cadance of speach, his attitude. Marty 100%.

Apparently I married a young Paul Newman and did not even know it....

Yes, I can see the differences. Paul has a different chin, his nose is slightly straiter, etc.... but the simularities are still there. The same height and build. The same hair. The same facial structure. The same piercing blue eyes, and my favorite, his smile.

So when Marty got home from his trip, we showed him the movie. He did not see so many simularities in how they look, but more so the his attitude. HE LOVES Paul Newman, gets a real kick out of all his movies.

The kids and I then took it upon ourselves to borrow every movie available at out library (that is a lot) that Paul Newman has made. We generally only view then when marty goes away for a work trip. We are much happier with the "Original" version of Marty, but somehow, watching Movies of Paul Newman gave us some kind of substitute when Marty, daddy, was away. A reminder of someone we loved, and knew loved back.

Marty had just gone away on a business trip last Friday. So that night, we all cuddle up in out bed and watch "The Long Hot Summer". That is the one in which he falls in love with his wife, Joanne Woodward. The kids and I fall asleep before it is over. Right at the part where Ben Quick takes over

in the general store. In the morning, I go to my computer to check my email, and see that Mr. Paul Newman has passed away. So I cried, and called Marty. Or tried to call as Marty left his cell phone in the cab....

I was 20 minutes late to a trunk show as I could not stop crying long enough to put on my makeup.

It is like when Betsy cries at the end of "Cool Hand Luke", or any of the many movies in which a character that Mr. Newman plays dies. She gets all upset, and yells at her dad "Why did you have to die?" She KNOWs the difference, she is 12, but the emotions are the same.

So an actor that reminds me and my family of my husband has sadly died. I have never been a fanatic, and I hope this does not seem too wierd. It seems a little wierd to me. But I seem to remember my mother crying over John Lennon.

We humans are a bundle of strange and complicated emotions. Mr. Newman charity's has inspired us too. I have always hoped one day that I could offer my line of jewelry as a 100% to charity business, like Newmans Own. I want to do this before I grow super wealthy, we just want to be able to support ourselves with one income. Marty is going back to school to get his engineering degree to make that possible.

"I picture my epitaph," he once said. "Here lies Paul Newman, who dies a failure because his eyes turned brown."

Film Critic Pauline Kael wrote in 1977 about Mr. Newman, "His likeableness is infectious; nobody should ever be asked not to like Paul Newman."

What were you doing 20 years ago?

20 Years ago I had just graduated from Beaverton High School. I was enjoying a sultry summer in Knoxville, Tenn. My mother had just moved there and wanted my company. So I scored a basement apartment in a grand mansion on five acres on a lake, complete with pool, tennis courts, manicured gardens, a pro tennis player living in the cabin near the lake, and a groundskeeper named Ted that took care of the many Pot Belly Pigs. The owner of the house was rarely there, she spent her time divided up between her 5 houses spread throughout the world. She was known as "The Pig Lady", as she had a fondness for them that extended far beyond simply having them as pets. She had her entire house decorated with them (except for the basement apartment, thanks be for that).

Everything that was a "thing" was piggy. There was pigs woven into the carpet, pigs on the fabrics of the furniture, curtains, tableware. The skillets were shaped like a pig. She had pig nick nacks and pig shaped doorknockers. It was simply facinating. Aside from the pigs, that estate was easily the most luxurious place I have ever lived.

So I went to work for Monet Jewelers that summer. I learned so much from that company, and it helped shaped some of my policys I now employ in Elizabeth Jewelry, My own company. Such as the lifetime unconditional guarantee, and quality first. I was just a sponge for new information. I loved it!

This Friday I am going to my 20th High School reunion. It is hard to imagine that I am that old. I still feel 18. Only wiser, and there are no pigs in the yard.

last Weekend was the Portland Oregon Gift Show. We attended as exhibitors with both our sample line and one of a kinds. We had a blast! There was so many wonderful people there, the booths next to us were all just the most lovely people. We bought, sold, traded ( You can be guaranteed Jelly Bellys in your package everytime you order!). All in all a very fun and successful event. We will be at the October show!

Yesterday Elizabeth jewelry was featured on our local Morning news show! Good Day Oregon KPTV Channel 12 in Oregon had their feature reporter on site at my studio from 6:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M! Joe and I discussed the jewelry I made for the Portland Rose festival Princesses. We had a total of 6 interviews and about 4 teasers. It was great fun, even thought I had to be up by 4:00 A.M!

Joe was instruncted by me on how to make the earrings! It was very funny, and all you jewelers out their know how funny it can be when you are trying to teach someone how to wire wrap for the first time! He was insistant that it could be done without pliers! I wish we had footage of what went on behind the scenes!

Set Up at the Portland Gift Show

These are two pictures of Tammie setting up at the Portland Gift Show this last Jan. There was no lighting in the convention center during set up so it is very dark. The other is pic. of Marty, Betsy and I showing off the new weight set Marty made (machined out). It took no less than 40 minutes for my computer to download these three pics, and I dont know tech stuff so I dont know why, I even made it small file size. So the pics are arranged a little discombobulated. Today I will be in the Roses! Silver roses that is as I am working on the Portland Rose Garden order. Very fun.

Well roll me in honey and send me out to the Acme Feather company, I POSTED A PICTURE! pretty soon I will be doing other new fangled things like texting. I am on the phone with a Lawyer to get my name protected like copyrighted and trademarked. My business name silly.... Apparently there is a New York Company with my same name, and I have been told that even thought i have been in business for 7 years longer than them, they could copyright the name and legally demand that I change mine. I have not wanted to bother with this for years, believing in others best, but my staff if really not letting me off the hook! So to give them and I guess me ease of mind, I am protecting my business name. Can't hurt. I just hate sounding pretentious....

Shop is getting more and more things on it! It sure takes time! I decided to have fun and "romance" the description a bit. I am going to (when I have the time) write a short story about each item in it's description. This is purely for entertinment value as I know I am not a writer of any sorts. I am sure people will take two things from it- one- artists are allowed to be playful and silly without taking themselves, or their art, too seriously. And two- it might be worth a giggle to see what's next!

On the personal side- My kids were all in a great mood last night so we played Monopoly for 4 (FOUR) hours! My son is very sleepy!
